USQ’s Online Learning Platform

Background
I received a request from the Web Support team in USQ Media & Communications to produce a short animated video which promoted USQ’s online learning services to an external audience.

After a brief meeting with client by phone, I carefully considered and eventually accepted the proposal: while this work area is generally outside the scope of my client base (I primarily produce work for Enterprise Services Division work areas), I took this on this project as an opportunity to upskill with the character animation involved, and as a learning & networking opportunity with other clients across the organisation.

Production Process
I received a script from the Communication Officer in their work area, to which I produced a storyboard with Adobe Illustrator for client review which illustrated the key visual shots of the intended video. This storyboard included stock assets sourced from Adobe Stock. After submitting this storyboard for review, the client decided to trim the overall length of the script & storyboard to keep the video concise, and provided several minor edits to improve the content and incorporate more USQ initiatives within the visuals.

After approving the updated storyboard and receiving the voiceover recording from talent, I proceeded to production by converting the storyboards into editable assets and applying my technical knowledge to bring the video to life within Adobe After Effects. I undertook research on character animation through YouTube tutorials to improve my understanding of best practice techniques. I used the After Effects software addon Duik which provides additional capability for easier character animation.

For screen capture, I captured this using OBS and used scale and position settings in After Effects to adjust the zoom and timings to focus on relevant parts of the USQ student portal and website.

I submitted to client for review, and made minor visual changes to align to key requirements, and delivered to Media & Communications for final review and approval. Once approved by the Director (Media & Communications), I supplied the Web Support team with the MP4 video file suitable for uploading to YouTube.
